Description:

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the impact of Westphalian ideology in governing common spaces and to explore the potential benefits of establishing a global monitoring regime that both encourages international collaboration and that advocates new systems more effectively and peacefully able to govern outer space and other common spaces. Archival, observation, and interview methods were applied to evaluate current and past United States and international outer space policy. The research acknowledged that the establishment of an outer space governing regime will require the U.S. government to revise its national security interests, and concludes by offering policy implications and solutions using the example of the Antarctic Treaty System, ocean governance, and preventive diplomacy.
