The purpose of this research is to consider media effects among groups exposed to different language media. It focuses on Hispanics, as they are one of the largest growing segments of the population in the United States. Using a mixed method approach, this project incorporates both qualitative and quantitative analysis to analyze the differences in framing and agenda setting between Spanish and English language media and the effects this might have on different language media consumers. A content analysis and comparisons of a cross-national sample of Spanish and English newspaper sources on both salient and non-salient political issues shows there are notable differences in how information is covered. Additionally, survey research shows different political opinions among Hispanics in the United States that consume this different language media, even when controlling for such things as partisan identification. While the connection between the media and opinion formation is not entirely clear, this research presents a new, more diverse approach to media studies that helps us further disentangle this relationship. In addition, it suggests there are differences in opinion formation that are attributable to differences in framing and agenda setting.
