Description:

The Federal Elections Commission database of political donors reveals that donations to political campaigns are spatially dependent. That is, donors tend to live close to one another, independent of socioeconomic and demographic factors. This dissertation examines the circumstances under which this phenomenon occurs. Using original survey data and interviews of donors in Santa Barbara County, this dissertation finds that neighborhoods that are trusting and politically homogeneous especially encourage donations to political campaigns.
