- Description:
My dissertation explores the culture and politics of street demonstrations in Vichy France. I examine why people took to the streets and what prompted protest. I compare and contrast four different types of street demonstrations, their participants, and locales. Students were the first to protest, but I also analyze housewives' demonstrations, demonstrations against labor conscription (the releve and the STO), and patriotic protests on Armistice Day and Bastille Day. I track how French and German authorities sought to prevent street demonstrations and how well their efforts worked over time. I examine the difficulty in protesting under an authoritarian regime and whether demonstrations undermined public support for Vichy. Street demonstrations challenged the regime's legitimacy by questioning whether the French state could garner public support and maintain order. Collective spaces of cities offered French citizens a place to appropriate and give new meaning to everyday acts and rituals. In showing the impact of public dissent against an authoritarian state, I underscore the importance of the street as a space for opposition and contribute to histories that document France's long tradition of popular protest.
