Description:

Roberto Bolano: The Narrative Esthetics of a Personal Ethic. A thesis presented on the subject of Hispanic American Literature. This dissertation deals with the fictional works of Chilean writer Roberto Bolano, focusing largely on the narrative esthetics brought into play by the writer in his extensive oeuvre. This dissertation analyzes the esthetic resources that allow the author to construct a fictional self-representation that is manifested in the character Arturo Belano. This character functions as an ethical discourse on what Bolano considers the `true poet', which is an idealization of what the Latin-American writer `should be'. In other words, I explore how an ethical discourse can be originated from the esthetical construction of a fictional alter ego. In my dissertation, I analyze what elements are finely carved in Roberto Bolano's fictions, as a part of an intentionality to convey an ontological meaning for his and his group's place in the Hispanic American literary tradition. My dissertation answers what untold discourses lay behind the self-made representation of Roberto Bolano.
