Description:

Manuscript fonds portugais 9 of the Bibliotheque nationale de France contains a ca. 1460 version of the Old Portuguese Cronica Geral de Espanha de 1344, which tells the history of the Iberian Peninsula from its biblical beginnings until the 15th century. It is considered a textual milestone in Iberian historiography through its Old Portuguese and Old Castilian versions, and even through its reception in Catalan historiography from the Renaissance.

This dissertation focuses on the history and circulation of the Cronica Geral de Espanha de 1344 based on archival research. This manuscript was most probably commissioned in Portugal around 1460 for Pedro, Constable of Portugal. In fact, the text of the Cronica offers an expansion probably used as a political maneuver that praises Pedro's royal dynasty and its place in the history of the Iberian realms. The manuscript itself is a relevant example of medieval transnationalism applied to manuscript circulation as cultural and social artifact, and its circulation throughout the centuries is the result of the historical and diplomatic connections between Portugal, Catalonia, and France. My long term research goal is to review the theories concerning the origins and whereabouts of the manuscript in the light of new materials.
