Engineering awards -- UCSB mechanical engineering seniors, winners of awards totaling $225 for their design and construction of various device, including this artificial arm for research purposes, are congratulated by Dr. Gregg Hobbs (center, right), chairman of the Santa Barbara section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, sponsor of the awards. From left, are (kneeling, front) Dean Brown, Michael Rizzuto, (standing) Win Johnson, James Christ, Rich Anderson, Dr. Hobbs, Don Aubrey and Ken Spouse. Other winning devices were a water desalinization unit made from household refrigerator components, and an arm muscle trainer which replaces weights and pulleys by providing resistance by means of an electric motor (for use by the Santa Barbara Memorial Rehabilitation Foundation).
