Description:

Three studies investigated the effect of apology on intergroup relations outcomes. Study 1 demonstrated that apology can shape intergroup forgiveness and retribution, and that it does so via changes in specific intergroup emotions felt by members of the apology recipient group (i.e. the anger and respect students felt towards faculty members). Studies 2 and 3 were designed to evaluate the role of appraisals in this process, and to determine whether specific apology components can be effective in modulating specific suites of appraisals, emotions, and intergroup relations outcomes. In order to generate differing profiles of anger and fear, I manipulated the emotions felt in response to an intergroup transgression in Study 2 (via the emotional consequence of the transgression itself) and Study 3 (via the emotional response of fellow ingroup members). There was no evidence for a unique effect of different apology components in these studies. However, the results provide some support for the proposed model of intergroup apology, in which apology is a special type of intergroup event capable of updating post-transgression appraisals, emotions, and intergroup relations outcomes.
