- Description:
This dissertation explores the spaces of entertainment (cruising zones) that serve as a place for the homosexual characters to exist/interact with others (similar or/and different), and have a life that is still not possible in the dominant society. While the characters coexist in these kinds of zones, they transform environment and places to their advantage. I discuss the value of all the different types of spaces in the formation of the personal/collective and cultural identity of the protagonists. These significant places serve as a tool for the characters to manipulate their disadvantages they have in a repressive society.
In this work, I present an analysis of four Mexican novels: Los 41: una novela critico social (1906) by Eduardo A. Castrejon (seud.), El diario de Jose Toledo (1964) by Miguel Barbachano Ponce, El vampiro de la colonia Roma (1979) by Luis Zapata and Las puberes caneforas (1983) by Jose Joaquin Blanco. The texts narrate the story of homosexual characters in Mexico City and their personal and collective experience with the spaces of entertainment and sexual expressions in the urban setting.
