- Description:
The radical changes in the political system that Chile has experienced in the last fifty years have affected the way different generations of citizens relate to the political world. I examine the emergence of a new generation of citizens, completely socialized during democracy, who are using unconventional participation channels to affect the public agenda. Using survey data collected in Chile from 1990 to 2011 I unearth the differences in political attitudes and behaviors of three generations of Chileans. I find that the characterization of Chilean youth as pervasively apathetic does not hold if analyzed under a more expansive view of citizenship. I also find that the use of social media as a political information outlet positively affects youth support for extra institutional participation channels.
